Spending a lot of time in the sun can lead to skin damage regardless of your skin type. If you have fair skin, burn easily in the sun, use sunbeds or have spent a lot of time outdoors, you are at an increased risk of sun damage. 

Skin type and sun damage

Skin type 1

Typical features:
Pale white skin, blue/hazel eyes, blonde/red hair, freckles

Tanning ability:
Burns very easily, rarely tans

Risk of sun damage:
Very high

Skin type 2

Typical features:
Fair skin, light hair, blue/brown eyes

Tanning ability:
Burns easily, may tan gradually
 

Risk of sun damage:
High

Skin type 3

Typical features:
Darker white/light olive skin, darker hair

Tanning ability:
Tans easily, may burn with long exposure

Risk of sun damage:
High/Medium

Skin type 4

Typical features:
Light brown/olive skin, dark eyes and hair

Tanning ability:
Rarely burns, tans easily

Risk of sun damage:
Medium

Skin type 5

Typical features:
Naturally brown skin, dark eyes and hair

Tanning ability:
Rarely burns, darkens easily

Risk of sun damage:
Medium/Low

Skin type 6

Typical features:
Dark brown or black skin, dark eyes and hair

Tanning ability:
Burns only with extreme sun exposure

Risk of sun damage:
Low
